Looking for a transitional camera?

My first digital camera was (is) a Nikon L1. This is what I have done with it

Now I am looking for a camera to transition to more serious photography. I want a wider range (more close ups, more pics in lower lighting), but I can’t give up real time display on the LCD. I’ve tried a konica minolta S7, but that’s way too complicated for me. 99% of my pics with that camera are terrible, as I have to guess what the photo looks like before I take it (and obviously I’m not very good at that), I can’t read the RAW, can’t easily print it, so it’s frustrating like hell.
I would like a camera with live view, but that would open to experimentation. I’d like to play with focus, ISOs, and shutter speed. Ideally, it wouldn’t be too bulky, as I walk and travel a LOT. But then, I may be asking too much. Any ideas?
I shudder to think that I am mentioning this camera when I like so many other cameras better, so let’s just say for the record that I am merely making you aware of its presence. Okay, it’s not a bad camera – not a handicap to creativity, but I just like others better.
If you insist on having a live LCD for composition, you need to look at the Olympus Evolt E-330, 7.5 Megapixel, SLR, Digital Camera. B&H Photo offers this in a kit with the Olympus 14-45mm f/3.5-5.6 Zuiko EZ Zoom Lens and the Olympus 40-150mm f/3.5-4.5 Zuiko EZ Zoom Lens for $700. Since the lens factor is 2X (due to slightly smaller sensor than most), the 14-45 lens is equivalent to 18-90 and the 40-150 is equivalent to 80-300. This gives you a pretty good range of focal lengths, so it’s good bang for the buck. These _are_ the “entry level” lenses, though, so while they may be adequate, it’s the lenses that you will upgrade as you move out of your transitional stage.
The 10 MP Evolt 410 is not released yet, but it will cost about $200 more than the E330.
