First time photographer, need a camera?
Hi, I’m young 20-something filmmaker (writer/director) who’s been working in digital video for the past 8 years. I’m aware of the basics of photography (iris, shutter speed, ISO, aperature, focus, etc.) but I never had the opportunity to take a photography class…as in with real film.
I realize DSLRs would probably be cheaper, faster, and maybe even more lucrative to my profession and the technological age we live in…but to be honest, I want an old, 20th century, hold the photos in my hand, no computer chip, no codec camera. I don’t necessary want a cheap one- not some 6,000 Leica or something, but somewhere in the 1,000 range will be feasible.
I really do want to use it to learn photography. But it’s important to me that it’s pre-digital….
Any suggestions?
That’s a good question.
My favorites for the money is Leica M3, Nikon F5, Mamiya RZ67, Nikon FM10 and Hasselblad 500 C/M. If you want to have a rich, gratifying experience using film it is hard to beat a Hasselblad with Zeiss glass. Gorgeous images.
Don’t forget to budget a little bit for your chemistry, hand tank, dark bag and a decent film scanner.
