Ideal photography settings for sports (daytime lacrosse)?
Lacrosse is what I’m photographing. It’s played under the setting sun, usually, at around 5:30 – 8:00 (around 8:00 does it start to get more football-under-the-lights, so I don’t even bother). Today it’s actually brightly cloudy, which I like.
The camera I’m using is the school’s Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi. The lens is the school’s Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 17 – 85mm.
What settings should I be using? So far my pictures are all right; usually the fastest moving part of the target (the head of the lacrosse stick) is blurred a bit. I am actually using manual focus since the autofocus is … A little funky right now. It bounces back and forth between focus and blur and can’t choose but ends up taking the shot blurry.
This lens doesn’t zoom very well, either. 
I will probably be using it this summer, when the sport will be played more during the day rather than the setting sun.
Any dSLR can do the job, what you really need is a lens like the 300 mm f/2.8 or 100-300 mm f/4/5-5.6
Your settings will be determined by you, using the cameras light meter. Just make sure that the shutter speeds you use are faster than 1/1000th second
