Digital Photography Defined

digital photography defined
Is the sharpness of a digital photo best judged close-up, or, at a “natural portrait-viewing distance”?

Some manipulations that increase the contrast of a photo can appear to not affect the sharpness, at a natural viewing distance (i.e., perhaps ~ 12 in. from your eyes). However, a considerable increase in square “blocks” that resemble JPEG artifacts that greatly reduce the close-up sharpness are introduced, but yet they are visible ONLY when the photo is viewed up-close, at several hundred percent digitally magnified.

The Nik Sharpener plugin for Photoshop may or may not define a universally applicable “natural viewing distance” for casual everyday macroscopic photography that does not involve using the photos for such things as recording critical evidence or any type of analog or digital data capture.

It’s normal to view sharpness on a computer on image files when they are viewed at 100%, i.e. actual pixels. The size it appears on the screen is determined by how many pixels there are in the file. How big you can print without adding pixels to pad the file out (interpolation) depends on this number too as does the amount of sharpening you can (and need to) apply.

You can avoid the ‘blocks’ up to a point by allowing the software to interpolate the image file to add more pixels. These are ‘invented’ pixels derived from the data. This always works better when you start with a large file, it’s not very effective with the small files such as those downloaded from the web.

It’s possible for an out of focus image to look sharp if the edges in the picture are high contrast. This applies to colour contrast as well a Luminance contrast.

If your talking about viewing a print then you may be viewing the individual pixels laid down by the printer particularly if the print is small, the smaller the print the higher the printer resolution (DPI) needs to be.

If you get the sharpening right then viewing distance doesn’t enter into it for all practical purposes.

Night Photography (Paperback)

Night Photography (Paperback)

$59.09

Night photographers have one big thing in common: a true love of the dark. Rather than looking at night photography as an extension of daytime shooting with added complications, they embrace the unique challenges of nocturnal photography for the tremendous wealth of creative opportunities it offers. That`s just what this book does. But if the idea of setting out into the deep, dark night with just your camera (and maybe a cup of coffee) gets your creative juices flowing, dive right in. Lance Keimig, one of the premier experts on night photography, has put together a comprehensive reference that will show you ways to capture images you never thought possible. If you have some experience with photography and have always wanted to try shooting at night, you`ll learn the basics for film or digital shooting. If you`re already a seasoned pro, you`ll learn to use sophisticated techniques such as light painting and drawing, stacking images to create long star trails, and more. A chapter on the history of night photography describes the materials and processes that made night photography possible, and introduces the photographers who have defined night photography as an artistic medium. A chapter on how to use popular software packages such as Lightroom and Photoshop specifically with night time shots shows you how to make the final adjustments to your nocturnal creations. In this book you`ll find history, theory, and lots of practical instruction on technique, all illustrated with clear, concise examples, diagrams and charts that reinforce the text, and inspiring color and black and white images from the author and other luminaries in the field, including Scott Martin, Dan Burkholder, Tom Paiva, Troy Paiva, Christian Waeber, Jens Warnecke and Cenci Goepel, with Foreword by Steve Harper.*Includes the most complete information available for learning the art of light painting *Covers both film and digital shooting *Stunning color and black and white imag

Film & Digital Techniques for Zone System Photography

Film & Digital Techniques for Zone System Photography

$22.39

Avid art photographers will learn how to model their work after legendary black-and-white photographer Ansel Adams in this instructional guide. Adams’ methodology known as the Zone System takes what the viewer will see the final print into consideration at the beginning of the photographic process rather than focusing strictly on what the photographer sees. Once this concept called "previsualization " is presented and defined the book then follows a step-by-step approach to incorporating these ideas into all aspects of the photographic process including lighting exposure development or digital editing and printmaking or output of digital images. Whether working in film or digital media these steps will foster early accuracy and elicit better source material from a camera which allows for greater control and contrast in the lab or on a printer.
