The former site states: “His unique images of Russia on the eve of revolution–recorded on glass plates–were purchased by the Library of Congress in 1948 from his heirs. For this exhibition, the glass plates have been scanned and, through an innovative process known as digichromatography, brilliant color images have been produced. This exhibition features a sampling of Prokudin-Gorskii’s historic images produced through the new process; the digital technology that makes these superior color prints possible. . .”
So, are the pictures being shown remakes from Prokudin-Gorsky’s plates? Or are they restored originals? Did his originals look similar? I’m not quite sure what to make of all this. It’s quite amazing.
They are remakes from the original plates. They use a different process, but it is an attempt at digitally matching and creating his original projected images. Amazing how this and things like HDR imaging originated in the 1800s.
