Good Lenses For Canon Rebel XTi.?

I am considering a Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD Macro Lens:

which with the camera will put me right at my budget, or a cheaper zoom lens and the Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.8 II Autofocus Lens:

I’m going to college next fall for photography and need a Digital SLR seeing as I already have two film SLRs.

Are these good lenses for my budget((about $750-$780)), or does anybody else have any other lens configurations within my budget from B&HPhoto.com

Also I will probably get more lenses when I start college as I need them with scholarship/pale grant money.
I have to buy the camera with my budget. The camera is $589.00. That leaves me with about $150.00 for lenses until college funds start rolling in.

Don’t waste your money on a third party zoom. Yech.

The Canon 50 F/1.8 is a great idea. One of the best values in photography.

Ok, that leaves you with $681. That is enough money to spend on a very good prime or wide angle lens!!! What kind of photography interests you the most?
