Photography – Getting the foreground clear and the background blurred?

how do i make the foreground clear while the backgrounds blury using canon powershot s5 IS

I have a camera kinda like this one…

http://www.canon.com.au/en-AU/For-You/Digital-Cameras/Powershot-Digital-Cameras/SX1IS-Camera

Its a Canon Powershot S5IS

When i take pictures, the foreground is always blurry and the background is clear.
I’ve changed settings, googled it and read the handbook that came with it.
It always focuses on the background.

How do i take photos with the foreground clear while the background is blurry?

I’m really into photography and my photos are turning out kinda bad at the moment.
The only way i know how to make the background blurry is if i use “Macro, and Super Macro” But i don’t want my photos to be that close every time.

* You might be standing too close to your subject.

* Have you tried auto mode? If it’s still doing this in auto mode, and you’re standing at least a few feet back from your subject, there might be something wrong with your camera.

* The effect you’re talking about is called bokeh. The camera you have isn’t great for getting this type of effect. You can fake it by blurring the background in a photo editor like Photoshop.

* Try adjusting the aperture settings.
