Digital Photography Lighting Tricks

Cool things to do with DSLR camera with a 55mm lense and a tripod?

I’m now taking a digital photography class at college and I have the new Cannon rebel T1i slr camera with a 55mm lense and my new tripod. I’m really getting into the whole photography things and love learning new tricks like slowing the shutter and drawing with light in a dark room or moving the camera slightly as a car goes by keeping the car in focus and bluring everthing around it. My camera is also capable of hd video.

I’m just curious to learn any really cool tricks for taking some interesting photos and or video. Don’t be afraid to get technical I’m new to slr cameras but I’m learning and have a pretty good grasp on the concepts and manual settings.

So leme know some cool techniques! My only limitation is what I have. I’m a broke art student so buying new gear like lenses and stuff is out of the picture. I’m also a graphic design major so I’m pretty skilled in photoshop and similar programs for photo manipulation

Looking forward to your answers!

How about an infinitely mirrored depth of field shot. A shot of a a person or object using depth of field but having ghost images behind. A woman walking down a beach with a fairly non-descript look. 5 or 6 of her behind herself starting at about 50% transparency going deeper into the background with each possiblity. They could each represent a different emotion or look or even time. One of them looking down biting her thumbnail, one reading a book. One walking hand in hand with her husband. One joyous. One sobbing. One older or younger. Could even have one of her older as but a ghost in front of her. The final image barely discernible. Of course each of them have a corresponding effect on the surroundings. As the transparency goes down the depressions her feet make are less pronounced and not as deep as the preceding. Not an intersection where she is driving and 3 other ghost images take different paths with one being demolished as another car goes through the red light. Combining DOF shots to bring most of the attention on her, while letting the viewers know where she is, and the after images behind her. The tripod of course having to be rock solid as the separate shots are taken. Having an interaction on her surroundings might bring more to the shots. Could be walking through leaves, snow, sand, carpet or most anything impressionable. How will the rule of thirds help determine who goes where? How will you make the most of natural lighting? How will focus play a part? Colors? Contrast? Display some of the disciplines you are learning. How will you pull of such an obvious edit without appearing forced or pasted or just thrown together. Layer masking? Gradient focus? Less saturation as time goes back? The same. Just make sure it flows freely. Whatever you do relax.
