Photography as a Profession.. so many questions.. including school and jobs?

I want to go to The Art Institute in Orange County California…

1). How can I pay for about $60,000 in tuition? What are some good student loans. I’ve heard about the government loans.. but it confuses me.. so how do those work? And can I get enough?

2). The Art Institute would get me an Associates Science in Digital Photography… what kind of full time jobs can I get with that and do I need more to get a better job? I mean, I know your portfolio counts for a lot, but just schools wise what do I need?

3). What full time photography jobs are oit there? I know National Geographic doesn’t have staff photographers anymore, but do any other magazines or other companies?

I’d love to make a profession out of photography.. and I see a lot of people saying you can’t.. but, don’t you see all the pictures everywhere?

ANY information would be awesome. Thanks.

1). How can I pay for about $60,000 in tuition? What are some good student loans. I’ve heard about the government loans.. but it confuses me.. so how do those work? And can I get enough?

They Art Institute has a financial aid deparment where you can get a lot of information on student loans. Keep in mind that a living in the OC is going to cost you $1500 per month.

2). The Art Institute would get me an Associates Science in Digital Photography… what kind of full time jobs can I get with that and do I need more to get a better job? I mean, I know your portfolio counts for a lot, but just schools wise what do I need?

There are no photography jobs that you can get with a degree in photography. Potential employers are only interested in your portfolio, and no one cares if you went to school for it or not. Someone who never graduated high school will be just as hirable as someone with a PhD.

3). What full time photography jobs are oit there? I know National Geographic doesn’t have staff photographers anymore, but do any other magazines or other companies?

Most magazines and newspapers do not have staff photographers. There are probably less than 500 in the entire U.S. Most of those jobs pay barely above minimum wage, unless you are talking about the top papers like the New York Times. Also, most anlysts expect that all the newspapers will be gone by 2025.

You definitely can make a living at photography, but you really need to be good at it, as well as have the business acumen for a lifetime of self employment.
