Digital Photography Manipulation Techniques

digital photography manipulation techniques
Color Manipulation!?!?

I have just begun getting into photography, and i have seen alot of pictures where the whole picture is black and white and one part is a color, or multiple parts. For example….http://flickr.com/photos/sapphie/102510285/
or http://flickr.com/photos/sapphie/58872793/

I have also seen pictures where the original color was changed to a different color…like http://flickr.com/photos/pinksherbet/194263753/in/set-72157594196844911/

What is the actual name for this technique and how can i do this to my pictures…do i have to buy a special picture program for my computer…or should it be included on the program that came with my digital camera…THANKS!!!

This is called selective color. You can do it in photoshop or paintshop pro. The nice thing about paintshop pro is that it is very inexpensive and very capable. Here is how it is done:

To produce selective color, the steps woud be:

Layer>duplicate layer

Image>Adjustment>Desaturate (there are other ways to make black and white photos but this is easiest)

Then click on the eraser tool (the little icon in the tool palette that looks like a block) and erase whatever part of the black and white photo you want in color.

Here’s an example from a wedding that I shot: I did this using the exact technique as above, except I used a more complicated method (the channel mixer) to do the black and white conversion. And while I use photoshop CS, I did this one in Paintshop Pro (the program I mention above).
