Amateur Photography hourly rate?

I’m an amateur photographer. I’m experienced but don’t have the money to start a business yet.Anyways…

I got contacted by a potential client who found me through my website. He owns a small modeling agency and wants to revamp his client’s portfolios by getting new pictures done. He has ALL the equipment(lights, backdrops etc…minus the camera and photographer) and it’s going to be done at HIS studio/business. He has 24models.

He wants to know what I will charge for an hourly rate. Should I charge a higher hourly rate($40/hr?) and give him the CD-DVD digital prints with full rights?Should I charge a median hourly fee($20/hr) and then charge an amount for the amount of images on the CD?(20images=$25 for example?) Should I make a small watermark for my images on the CD?

ANY ADVICE?!

ROFLMAO at fhotoace’s answer.
Now there is someone who a. doesn’t read the question and b. likes to think they are something they are obviously not.

A small modelling agency is not an advertising agency.

The photographer is an amateur not a pro.

Right, I would approach it in this way.

This is an opportunity for you to get shots for your book and to gain more experience in shooting portraits and a bit of fashion.

Speak to him and find out exactly what he wants in the way of style and quantity for each model.

Does he want you to do any or all of the post production work or does he just need the raw shots?

When you have worked out between you what is required then you can start talking money and the licensing agreements.
If it is only a few shots for each model then you would be able to complete it in about a 7 -10 days for the lot. That is a couple of hours per model per 8 hour day plus a day or two to process them.

If it is images on cd after this then charge a basic day rate. Start the negotiations at 300-350 per day.

You need to give him a license to use the images which should be included in the price. The license should be for use in the models book and for promotion of the agency only.
Any other usage requires re-negotiation and extra payment.

You in turn need to ensure that you retain the right to use the images yourself. Initially for your own book/promotion but it would also be good to get a release signed to be able to use the images for stock and the like.

It is unlikely that the client will want your watermark on the images. That is not standard, but you should be credited on the promotional material.

Pitch it that way and see what the client says.
Small modelling agencies don’t have a bundle of money and he is asking you to do it for cost and convenience. Pitch it to high and you will not get it. To low and you will lose out in the future.
If you do a good job at a reasonable price now then the chances are you will get more work in the future and he could well recommend you to his clients when the models are being booked.

Bob: who cares if I upset people – if they can’t take the truth then that is not my fault. The person in question gives answers full of so much b.s. on a regular basis that I have to wonder if his real name is not Walter Mitty.
