Digital Photography Post Processing

digital photography post processing
Jerry Uelsmann & Maggie Taylor?

Recently we’ve seen a lot of questions/comments concerning image manipulation in post-processing. Some people seem to think that manipulation began with the digital age. Some people seem to think it somehow “violates” the purity of photography.

Look at the works of Jerry Uelsmann. http://www.uelsmann.com

Now look at the works of his wife, Maggie Taylor.

http://www.maggietaylor.com

Both artists are incredible image manipulators, Jerry in the darkroom and Maggie with her computer.
Your thoughts on their work?

I was amazed at the examples of work on the two sites. I can understand how some people feel photography should be a purist endeavor to capture the moment as it would have been perceived if you were there with the photographer. So a photographer can mirror the real world. But a photographer manipulates the image every time his sets up his lighting and directs the position of his subject in relation to the camera.

I do feel there is a point where someone can be a good photographic technician and be a good photographer and there are other people that have taken the photographic skills and used them to create an art form that is more than just photograph. These are two individuals that that did not use their post production skill to overcome flaws in the original photograph, which I agree with the purist is that technology should not be an excuse to ignore problems that could be fixed in camera rather than post because the software can hide the production flaws. But I am not going to condemn a photographer that has excelled in his craft that he can use his images to illustrate surreal images as unique and rich as Salvidor Dali, or other artist that used pen and ink or paints and pastels to produce graphic illustrations that existed in no other place than the mind of the artist.. I think they should be recognized for their unique use of media wither or not you feel they fullfill your personal concept of photographer is.
