Digital Photography Research

Analog vs Digital photography?

I have to do a research paper on analog vs digital photography and i need some resources to go to to do my research and find info on both.
thanks.

The photo curator at Eastman-Kodak or Getty would be the first place I would check and then from them get further contacts throughout the industry. The curators at many of the fine photo art galleries and museums are other good places to approach.

However there is a problem with your thesis … the assumption that because there is now digital photography that there has to be analog. That is a bad premise perpetuated by those who are uninformed.

All photography is is analog … The way it is stored is either using a film or a digital medium. It can only be stored in a digital format AFTER the analog information captured by the sensor is processed through the cameras onboard analog to digital converter.

If you want to compare imagery captured by film vs. digital memory card, then that is an honest appraisal, based upon reality … not misinformation.

Until non-photographers got hold of P&S digital cameras and started attempting to rectify bad photo skills using software and calling that process “editing”, the word editing in the photo world meant sorting. A photo editor was a live human being sitting at a desk, usually at a newspaper or magazine, but could also work for an advertising agency as well. It was, and still is, up to them to determine which images are published or used in an ad campaign

Many of the words common to the profession of photography have been used incorrectly and then added to the vocabulary of the uninformed, thus exacerbating the problem.

Good luck in your research. Don’t forget to contact a few of the leading photo schools as well. Art Center in Pasadena, Brooks in Santa Barbara and RIT in Rochester, New York come to mind
