Digital Photography Scanners

Information on Film Negative Scanners & Editing Software?

Hey guys, Im a photography & film student and just recently bought my own analogue camera (nikon fm fully manual, 50 mm lens, 35 film). I have some experience in film cameras before so my questions does not concern the camera itself.

I was wondering what you could tell me about film negative scanners? What are the best kinds, where can I get them? I am also wondering once my images are scanned to the computer, what editing software can I use? Im aware of digital editing software like lightroom, photoshop etc but can I use these on film negs? Sorry for so many questions! Thanks :)

There are dedicated film scanners out now that don’t cost an arm and a leg like they used to. I have a Nikon Coolscan 4000 sitting on my editing desk at work. Next to it is a cheap Canon flatbed scanner with negative attachment. I use the Canon 99% of the time.

You can spend thousands, or you can spend much less. 100 quid ought to buy you a film scanner. Not really necessary if you have a flatbed that includes the function. Not all do, but the flatbed is much more useful. A film scanner can pretty much only do one thing, whereas the flatbed can do many more. A high-end film scanner is actually better quality wise, as it will have a wider dynamic range. You can’t often see that, but it is there.

Once scanned into the computer, you can use anything you wish to edit the digital file. I suggest you scan you original in TIFF (it will be a HUGE file!!!) to get the best quality, and then you can edit down to a final JPG. Store your TIFF scans on DVD as you go, and then you won’t have to re-scan the image again if you wish to edit further.
