Help with a question for my photography course?
For each of the following photographic assignments, describe the lens,
attachments and filters you would use. Assume that you are shooting on a
small format SLR digital camera with a full size 35mm sensor and have the
following lenses: 20mm, 28mm shift, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 100mm macro,
135mm, 300mm. Please give a brief explanation of why you made the
choices you did.
Q. An architect has hired you to photograph the façade of a new ten floor
building he has just completed, constructed of concrete. There are five
story buildings on the street opposite and he wants an accurate
rendition of his work.
This is a classic situation in architectural photography and presents two challenges
1. The furthest away you can get is the face of those buildings – any further, and they would be between you and your subject. Therefore, in order to frame the 10 story building, you need a lens with a wide angle of view.
2. If you stand on the sidewalk in front of the buildings across the street and frame the 10 story building, the image will ‘keystone’ – be larger at the bottom and smaller at the top – because you will have to tilt the camera. This would violate the specification calling for an accurate representation of the architect’s masterpiece. You can compensate for this by using a lens that has the ability to shift upward.
Therefore, a simple answer might be to use the 28mm shift lens. However, you didn’t tell us how wide the street is or how much shift the shift lens has. Therefore, we can’t be certain that the 28mm lens is wide enough to frame all ten stories of the subject building when your back is against the building across the street, and whether the shift is enough to allow you to include the top of the building while avoiding keystoning. And because you would be standing at the street level, this would give a more natural view of the building.
So an alternate strategy might be to use the 20mm lens, and then talk your way onto the roof of the building across the street. Because the roof is 5 stories, that places you halfway to the top of your subject building, you won’t need a shift lens and the 20mm lens should allow you to frame in the full subject. This approach could give the desirable appearance of the viewer being further away from the subject, but the angle of view might feel less natural because it would be from an elevated perspective.
