help with photography shutter speeds?
i have a canon eos 300 slr (not digital) and need help understanding shutter speeds. im doing a project with college under the influence of portraits and distortion.
for example a person at the side of a busy moving road, i want the person to stay in focus but the car moving in the background to be blurred. or people moving on a swing but the back ground in focus. what shutter speed do i need to have on my camera? on most internet sites it says numbers like 1/500th of a second or something like that but what does that mean i need to set my camera on? it gives me the option of 4” (and under) to over 60 on my camera screen. does the 60 + end mean that moving objects will be blurred of frozen and vice versa?
thanks for any help
also any ideas for the topis of portraits with some aspects of distortion would be fantastic.
Shutter speed dials, the shutter speeds are mostly fractions of a second, 1/500 is pretty fast (and I know some bodies feature much faster speeds but work with me here) and will freeze most action (exceptions, sure but …) a slower speed will permit relatively more blur of an object moving past the camera while a static subject in the foreground will still appear sharp. The shutter speed required for any given circumstance can be looked up in books or tables.
On your shutter speed dial 500 would be 1/500th second, 125 would be 1/125th (four times slower), 60 would be 1/60th, etc. Getting down to the slow end 1 is 1/1th (mathematically and equals 1 second. Or it may be written 1″, 2″ is 2 seconds, 4″ is 4 seconds, etc. These are very SLOW speeds and will blur most everything.
Note that speeds this slow require very low lighting conditions of you will overexpose the film. Very small apertures, low ambient light or ND filters will be needed.
Note two: most people cannot handhold shutter speeds much less than 1/60th of a second using any lens, get out your tripod.
Note three: a good rule of thumb is to use a shutter speed that is the reciprocity of the lens focal length if you plan to handhold your camera. 50mm lens 1/50th second (use 1/60 on your dial). 250mm lens use 1/250th second
